The Importance of Hydration: 3 Things You Didn’t Know About Water and Your Pets

Staying hydrated is essential to living a healthy, high-quality life for you and your pets. While you may think of this as a no-brainer, you’d be surprised at how easy it is to become dehydrated; especially for your pets. Pets have a strong sense of smell and can easily smell germs, bacteria, and viruses that may be lurking in their food and water bowls. As a result, they may be less inclined to drink the necessary amount of water that they need to be happy and healthy.

Here’s what you need to know about water and your pet.

Your Pet is Made of Water… About 80%

You might not have known this, but pets are about 80% of water, while humans are only about 60% water. On average, pets need about 1-2 ounces of water per pound for their body weight for a total of about 5 to 10 fluid ounces of water per day. Water helps to regulate body temperature, lubricate their internal organs and joints, and helps eliminate toxins from their body. The amount of water your dog and cat will drink may vary due to a variety of reasons like:

  • If they’re on a medication that causes them to drink more water
  • Pets who eat wet food vs kibble may drink less water
  • Fussiness of type of water (shoutout to all of our bottled water pet drinkers)
  • Climate and region. A hotter climate or region may require your dog to drink more water due to heat.

Fresh Water Several Times a Day is Essential

You wouldn’t drink water from an old water bottle in the back of your car, would you? Just as you prefer freshwater, so do your pets. Yes, they may be animals, but years of domestication have left pets with standards that are a bit higher than their distant cousins. Pets prefer the taste of freshwater to old water, just like you!  Additionally, bacteria and mold can easily grow in dirty water, even if the water never leaves your home. Outdoor water bowls and bottles are easily susceptible to be contaminated by parasites and other diseases spread by wildlife. Water should be changed at least 2-3 times a day, or more as necessary.

Can’t it Wait?

Many pet parents innocently assume that water can wait till they get home from the dog park, hikes, or long walks. Water should be drunk in small increments while out and about. Why? because a dog that is overheating or dehydrated may become ill if they take in too much water too quickly. Small or short intervals of water drinking while out with your pet will help keep them hydrated and safe. You can find pet friendly water bottles online or share your own with your best furiend.

The Kinn Difference

Kinn Kleanbowl is a 100% germ, bacteria, and virus-free bowl for pets to use while at home, on the road, or in the care of their favorite care provider. Because pets can smell germs and bacteria, Kleanbow’s sterile food and water bowl encourage pets to drink more water because they’re completely clean.

Proper hydration is only one of the benefits of pets drinking plenty of water. In fact, ordinary pet bowl germs help the formation of plaque which causes tartar, gum disease & bad breath. When food particles mix with your pet’s saliva, plaque begins to form and stick to teeth and gum lines. As pets smell Kleanbowl is plaque and germ-free, they enjoy more water which rinses away more plaque bacteria before it hardens onto teeth. Oral wellness can add up to 4 years to your pet’s life.
